Reality TV Star. Designer. BINTM judge. Now, Whitney Port lands on the latest cover of Company, for the magazine’s September 2020 issue. In the accompanying interview, the 27-year-old blonde beauty dishes on a wide range of topics including her personal style, finding inspiration for her fashion line, the qualities of a great intern, and many more.
Talking about her favorite spring/summer 2020 trends that got her through the sunny season, Port admits that she’s into prints. “I love, love, love floral prints. Any prints, in fact. I also like flats that have a menswear aesthetic to them, but can still be styled with a flirty, floral dress. I’m loving vintage jean jackets as an alternative to leather jackets for the summer too. I found a cool one in Topshop – it’s denim with light-blue leather sleeves. I love printed men’s work shirts too, like Equipment do, and you can find so many in vintage stores’ men’s sections,” Whitney says.
What about her style icons? “I’ve always loved Princess Diana. I think she was chic, classic and willing to take risks considering the life she was living. I love Diane Kruger, Alexa Chung and Rosie Hungtington-Whiteley. Rihanna is hot too. Oh and Gwyneth Paltrow,” she confesses.
On where she finds inspiration for her fashion line, Whitney Eve, the young designer confesses that, “I read A LOT of magazines. The ones outside of the states are usually the better ones, and because I’m constantly travelling, I pick up fashion magazines all over the world. I also go on Pinterest and type in keywords. Recently, I’ve been looking for hair and make-up inspiration. In terms of style, I search for interesting textures, print-on-print or summer fashion.”
When it comes to British style, Whitney admits that it influenced her a lot and made her take some risks. “When I first came to London, I was in awe of the girls walking down the street. They looked like they had just stepped out of a fashion shoot, with such a cool mix of prints, colour and texture – especially in east London. When you’re from LA, it’s easy to get stuck in that jeans and t-shirt look, but being in the UK has encouraged me to take more risks. I’ve tried to be a little more street and edgier. I wear my Doc Martens and leather jackets more,” she told the magazine.
Being an intern made her experience many unpleasant situations such as one memorable photo shoot with an ‘unnamed’ actress”. “I had to massage her feet and they were gnarly! It was at the beginning of my career so I did it without saying a word. It’s just what you do, but it was gross,” Port recalls.
But what qualities should an intern have? “[They should] have a great attitude and will do whatever it takes without necessarily having to be asked,” adding, “[They] shouldn’t be afraid to take a stance’ but should also beware of talking too much. There’s a balance between being involved and lingering too long. There’s a respectable distance,” Whitney explains.
