Grapefruit Diet Plan and Its Benefits

The grapefruit diet has been around since the 1930s. But this diet did not gain popularity till the 1970s. It is very comprehensive. It is easy to follow and gives you the necessary nutrients without depriving your body of the vitamins and minerals. For this diet, the serving size is 230g –it contains 97 calories and 25 carbohydrates along with calcium, phosphorus and sodium. It is free from fat. It also does not contain cholesterol.

This article gives you a 12 day plan for this diet, with 2 days off for a cheat plan.

Grapefruit Benefits and Diet Plan:

Breakfast:

For breakfast you can have 2 eggs, prepared any way and 2 slices of bacon which will give you your daily intake of protein and help to keep your energy up. With this, you have to add ½ a grapefruit or 120ml./4 oz. of freshly squeezed unsweetened Grapefruit Juice.

Lunch:

For lunch, you can have a salad with a low fat dressing, and meat. The meat should be lean, preferably fish or poultry. It can be cooked any style. It can be of any amount, not exceeding ½ a kg. With this, you have to add ½ a grapefruit or 120ml./4 oz. of freshly squeezed unsweetened Grapefruit Juice.

Dinner:

For lunch, you can have a dish made of sorted green, yellow and red vegetables cooked in any way, or with butter and seasoning. You can also have a salad with a low fat dressing, and meat. The meat should be lean, preferably fish or poultry. It can be cooked any style. It can be of any amount, not exceeding ½ a kg. With this, you have to add ½ a grapefruit or 120ml./4 oz. of freshly squeezed unsweetened Grapefruit Juice.

Bed Time Snack:

For the bed time snack, you are allowed 1 glass of tomato juice of 1 glass of skim or low fat milk.

Pros of the Grapefruit Diet:

For this diet, you will not need to count calories or change your dietary habits. This diet is rich in beta-carotene, vitamin C and other minerals. It helps to build immunity and prevents and protects against infections and cancer. Grapefruits are rich in pectin and flavonoids which make them an excellent source of antioxidant food. This diet helps to cut down on the risk of diabetes. The enzymes that are present in the grapefruits regulate the insulin levels of the body and help the body shed weight. This diet is easy to follow and stick to.

Cons of the Grapefruit Diet:

This diet is very low calorie. As a result, this diet may not be not be suitable for people who suffer from certain health conditions. This diet may cause fatigue, dizziness and headaches.

The Grapefruit Diet generally lasts for 7 to 21 days. This diet should be coupled with regular exercise. You should drink three to eight litres of fluid daily. A bare minimum intake of 8 to 12 glasses of water in needed every day.  This will help in kidney detoxification. Alternate between pure spring water; fresh 100 per cent fruit juices, fresh vegetable juice and herbal detox teas.
