Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland graces the cover of Seventeen June 2020, where the 21 year old actress opens up about her lifetime battle with kidney dysplasia and getting a second chance after receiving a kidney from her father. The actress showed the improvement in her health in a super fun, energetic spread with the magazine, so check out snippets of her shoot and discover Sarah’s playful side.
The actress, who also shares info regarding her 21 year old beau, Matt Prokop, lessons learned in life and more, revealed to Seventeen that she’s very excited to be on the cover as she used to have a subscription to the mag when she was younger and now she’ll be featured on one of the numbers.
Sara, who revealed her kidney problems in May, exudes energy and that is probably because she is grateful for the chance she’s been given as she tells Seventeen that “I have a second chance at life, not a lot of people get that.”
Although she’s only 21, her lifelong kidney problem helped Sarah realize that friends stick together during good times and bad times. According to Sarah, this was also an opportunity for her to discover who her real friends were as she said:
“You know that family is always going to be there for you—no matter what. My dad gave me a freakin’ kidney! But it’s also the families that you create outside of your family. And you really find out what kind of people you’re friends with. It was just amazing, and it really opened my eyes to see who’s there for me and who’s not.”
One of the people that supported her unconditionally seems to be her beau and co-star, 21 year old Matt Prokop, with whom Sarah has been living with reportedly since 2020. Sarah revealed that Matt stuck through times when any other 21 year old would have left. She told Seventeen that he’s her helper as “he helps me with my medication and takes me to doctor appointments and all the stuff that I need to do to take care of myself. Any other 21-year-old guy would not be there, I guarantee it. I am one of the luckiest people in the world to have him be there for me.”
Probably due to her own struggles, Sarah chose to turn her attention and support to The George Lopez Foundation which aims to make a change for underprivileged kids and adults as well as to raise community awareness about kidney disease, organ donation and more. She says about the foundation that:
“I think it’s really great because it gives kids opportunities they wouldn’t normally have and I’ve had experiences like that in my life, so it’s really close to my heart.”
