From Parisian belle to Hollywood superstar. Marie Claire UK got the chance to catch up with stunning French actress Marion Cotillard who graces the magazine’s August 2020 issue. In the accompanying interview, Cotillard opens up and dishes on her insecurities, unhappy childhood and what it feels to be in love. The 36-year-old Oscar-winning actress and star of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ confesses that when she met boyfriend Guillaume Canet in 2020, she fell into an “extreme state of love.”
Marion comes from a family of artists, her mother and father are both actors and she grew up in a ‘creative household’. Nevertheless, the actress admits that as a child she felt isolated and couldn’t free herself of the sense of loneliness “despite the liberal and bohemian upbringing her parents provided for her in her hometown of Paris and later Orleans.” “I had my own world and it wasn’t very happy,” she recalls. “I was not a very sociable kid. I didn’t really know what to do with myself when I was young.”
After some small performances in theater, Marion had minor roles in television series such as Highlander. Still, her career as a film actress began in the mid-1990s with small but noticeable roles in such films as Arnaud Desplechin’s My Sex Life… or How I Got Into an Argument. Next, she starred in hit films such as Inception with Leonardo DiCaprio, Public Enemies with Johnny Depp and she’s now appearing in one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises with the latest Batman offering, The Dark Knight Rises.
Talking to the magazine about her childhood and younger years in Paris, the actress confesses she had to face the jealousy of others. And she admits it was really difficult. “I was confronted by jealousy very, very early on, and when you’re a kid it’s hard to be different,” Marion told the latest issue of UK magazine Marie Claire. However, now she says that, “I’ve finally made peace with myself. I’ve met amazing people who gave me the keys to make peace with myself.”
So, she is a successful Hollywood star. But what would Marion be if she hadn’t become a super-famous actress? “I believe that you are where you should be and I believe that things that happen to you happen for a reason. So if it had never happened it would have been because I was meant to do something else,” Cotillard told the magazine.
