Working out is a pleasure for many, but a horrible chore for plenty, and celebrities are no different. While some enjoy working out in a variety of ways, others find ways to avoid the gym or simply suck it up when they really have to.
Check out some of the biggest celebrities who hate working out, yet still manage to stay in shape by being active outside the gym. From Jennifer Lawrence and Blake Lively to Emma Stone and Keira Knightley, find out what a few A-listers think about working out and discover their alternative celebrity fitness tips.
Jennifer Lawrence
Even though she’s one of the celebrities who hate the gym, Jennifer Lawrence likes to stay in shape, and working out is a necessity since she’s not into dieting. “I hate saying, ‘I like exercising.’ I want to punch people who say that in the face. But it’s nice being in shape for a movie,” she told Glamour magazine.
Blake Lively
The fact that she’s one of the celebrities who hate working out might change after Blake Lively gives birth and she wants to get back in shape quickly. But for now, she enjoys dark chocolate every day without any indoor exercise. “I hate the gym, so what I do instead is find other ways to be active… I ride bicycles, I hike, I go out and exercise in nature and I’m active that way,” she told ExtraTV.
Sofia Vergara
The 42 year old TV star also hates working out, and prefers dancing, but claims she can’t afford to stop going to the gym altogether if she wants to keep her figure. “I try to do Latin dancing for exercise because it’s so much fun and I just love the music. Two hours before I go [to the gym], I’m already wishing it was over. I psychologically fool myself into believing it’s part of my job,” Vergara confessed to Shape magazine.
Jessica Alba
Many celebrities who hate working out find it boring, and Jessica Alba only put up with it when her roles demanded it. “I hate working out. It’s boring! I really only did it when I had a job that was physically demanding. But from age 17 until I was 27, all I did were movies that were physically demanding – so all I did was workout all the time!” she told Self magazine.

Emma Stone
She avoid running because it’s “bad for your knees”, but Emma Stone isn’t a fan of going to the gym either. She told US Weekly: “I have deep-seated rage when I’m holding heavy weights over my head. Whatever dormant anger I have in me, that’s where it comes out. That’s not the kind of working out I want to do.”
Lauren Conrad
Hiking, paddleboarding and kayaking are Lauren Conrad’s replacement for the gym. Even though she stays active, she’s definitely one of the celebrities who hate working out. “I’m just not a fan of the gym. In fact, I hate it. I understand loving the feeling you get after working out, all those endorphins. But going there? It’s the worst,” she told Lucky magazine.
Mary J. Blige
For the singer, the gym is a necessary evil. “I appreciate what it does for me. And I wish there was a pill you could take that could do everything that is in that gym,” she told WebMD.
Reese Witherspoon
For some celebrities who hate working out, the morning aspect of it is the worst. Reese Witherspoon is one of them. “If I never had to see the inside of a gym again, I’d be a very happy person. Even the idea of it, I hate. There’s people who love it and it’s just their thing. I can do it, and I can do it for my job because I’m really lucky to get this job and have a job so I will do it. But it’s not my first choice of morning activity,” she confessed to Parade.

Eva Mendes
Since she doesn’t like dieting, Eva Mendes begrudgingly accepted that going to the gym is a must. “I’m like every other girl across the globe – I love chocolate and I hate working out. But the truth is I have to do it,” she explained to Grazia magazine.
Keira Knightley
Working with a personal trainer made Keira Knightley realize she’s one of the celebrities who hate working out. “I didn’t really like it. I don’t like pain. And I do find that working out is quite painful,” the actress confessed on “Late Show with David Letterman”.
