The Olsen sisters are launching two new fragrances for their Elizabeth and James fashion line. The two sisters are rapidly expanding their fashion empire and it seems they also felt ready to venture into beauty. The new scents are titled Nirvana Black and Nirvana White and will be exclusive to Sephora. The duo spent almost two years developing the scents which will hit the counters in late January 2020.
The Nirvana Black fragrance was the first one designed and took almost a year and a half to complete. Mary Kate and Ashley worked with Robin Burns, a fragrance veteran and Michael McGeever, senior vice president of Sephora and general manager of Kendo. It took 50 different versions of the scent, not including variations of individual notes to finally find the best combination. However, all the hard work payed off since the time to develop the second scent was significantly reduced: only a few months were necessary.
It’s no secret that the two stars are perfectionists and this was best reflected by their desire to avoid sending yet another average set of scents on the market. Mary-Kate told WWD.com that: “We didn’t want to do another very average commercial fragrance where it could be anybody’s name on the bottle and a visual, which would be a model with a bottle. We wanted to offer more than that and we wanted to offer a choice. I don’t want the fragrances to wear [the customer]. Ashley and I are really into oils, and those were the notes we were really attracted to. It was fascinating to see how many different variations of ingredients there were, how many different types of sandalwood, for instance. That was one of the things I found most interesting, the quality issues of these ingredients, and also balancing all of the notes so that they would sit well together in the juice.”
What about the notes of the new Elizabeth and James fragrances? The Nirvana White fragrance is defined by peony, muguet and musk notes while Nirvana Black scent features violet, sandalwood and vanilla notes.
More reasons to love the two sisters? They won’t be starring in the ads for the two scents and chose a regular girl instead of a model for the new campaign. They don’t want to use their name to boost sales but instead let the products speak for themselves.
The two new Elizabeth and James fragrances will come in three sizes: 50 ml.,30 ml. and a rollerball and will retail for $75, $55 respectively $22.
