Wonders of Robbers Cave with Pictures

Robbers Cave is a state park that’s located in the scenic, hilly woodlands of the Sans Bois Mountains of southeast Oklahoma. Formerly known as Latimer State Park, it received its present name in 1936. The park is a favorite of strollers, equestrians, hikers and outdoor lovers. It covers more than 8000 acres of land together with the adjoining wildlife management area. The park has three lakes that are perfect for trout fishing during season time and a pleasant boating experience. Other activities include hunting, mountain biking, trails for hikers and horses, sandstone cliffs for climbing and rappelling, and fall foliage viewing leaving visitors with plenty to look forward to.

History of Robbers Park:

The surrounding area of the park used to be a hunting ground thousands of years ago. The earliest inhabitants were people related to the builders of the Spiro Mounds. Outlaws were sheltered here after the Civil War, most notably Jesse James and Belle Starr.

Three lakes encompass the Park – Lake Carlton, Lake Wayne Wallace and Coon Creek Lake, which were created by dams built on a creek. Lake Carlton pictured in the image below, offers boating and canoe rental facilities.

The first annual Roberts Cave Fall Festival was instituted in 1987. Spanning over three days, the annual festival features handmade arts and craft by more than 200 arts and crafts vendors, stalls with delicious food and drinks and carnival rides and games. The festival also features the Fall Foliage Cruise on a Saturday where hundreds of customized and restored classic cars are on display. It is a fun-packed day for adults and children alike.

Roberts Cave State Park offers camping facilities ranging from modern RV sites to primitive tent sites and equestrian camp sites. Trails through the woods provide wonderful views over a small valley.

Lodging Facilities:

Roberts Cave State Park features 26 lodging cabins with one of them named Belle Starr View Lodge after the infamous fugitive Belle Starr. The lodge is complete with 20 rooms and a gathering room while providing a scenic view of Coon Creek Lake. All rooms in the lodge have double-beds that can accommodate four guests. Leashed pets are allowed in the park and in some of the cabins.

Robbers Cave State Park in Wilbur-ton provides an in depth trail system for hikers, be it for a plain hiking experience, mountain biking or horse riding. It is a paradise for horse riders with hiking trails that provide a breathtaking view over the San Bois Mountains.

Robbers Cave State Park in Wilbur-ton, Oklahoma is an ideal getaway for a family. It has everything you can think of from cabins to picnic tables, swimming pool with bathhouse, playgrounds for children, miniature golf ground, paddle boat rentals, horseback riding stables, a small grocery store, an on-site restaurant and a nature center to name a few. The Park facilities are numerous making it a great local attraction and a famous tourist spot.

A trip to Robbers Cave will not be complete without climbing the rocks and getting a glimpse of the cave from where the park gets its name and where infamous outlaws like Jesse James and Belle Starr took refuse from the law. The trails leading up to the cave are not very strenuous. Once on top, the view of the mountains is refreshing and well worth the effort.
