Just days after Pantone named Marsala the 2020 Color of the Year, some celebrities already rocked the soft cue on the red carpet. The hue was named after a fortified wine from Sicily, but it wasn’t as universally embraced as some of Pantone’s previous choices.
Find out more about the color and see a few celebrities wearing Marsala, both before and after the announcement that it’s Pantone’s 2020 Color of the Year. From Beyoncé and Taylor Swift to Blake Lively and Emma Stone, see a few great ways to rock the shade.
Marsala, Pantone’s 2020 Color of the Year
Chosen by Pantone for its “sophisticated, natural earthiness”, Marsala is a mixture of red and brown hues. After 2020’s Color of the Year, Radiant Orchid, a mix of pink, purple and fuchsia undertones, Marsala is definitely a richer shade, and some celebrities have already embraced it.
The color has faced some criticism, for invoking rust or dried blood, but Pantone’s choice is definitely flattering for many skin tones. If you’d like to see how the shade translates into a glamorous look, check out a few pictures of celebrities wearing Marsala, Pantone’s 2020 Color of the Year.
Beyoncé
One of the first celebs to jump on the trend, Beyoncé showed up at the the 2020 Billboard Women in Music Luncheon wearing a Haute Hippie dress with an asymmetrical hemline. The Haute Hippie Knotted Draped Dress was perfectly accessorized with Gucci platform sandals and Loraine Schwartz jewelry.
Taylor Swift
Beyoncé is definitely one of the celebrities wearing Marsala, Pantone’s 2020 Color of the Year, but Taylor Swift rocked the color one way before, at Z100’s 2020 Jingle Ball. Wearing a one-shoulder cut-out Reem Acra dress, Taylor completed her look with Jimmy Choo sandals.
Blake Lively
More than 6 months before Marsala was announced at the IT color for 2020, Blake Lively wore she shade at the 2020 Cannes Film Festival. The actress, who doesn’t employ a stylist, made the inspired choice of a Gucci gown in the rich red-brown hue, and ended up on the best dressed list.
Kaley Cuoco
Pantone’s 2020 Color of the Year has showed up on the red carpet quite a few times in the past few years, but few celebrities wearing Marsala managed to pull off the glamorous shade as well as “The Big Bang Theory” star Kaley Cuoco at the 2020 Emmy Awards. Her Vera Wang ball gown with a tulle skirt with organza scalloping landed her high marks from fashion critics.
Emilia Clarke
The “Game of Thrones” star also impressed in a Marsala dress in 2020, while attending the amfAR New York Gala. Wearing a Zac Posen gown with an eggplant satin sash, Emilia Clarke proved that Marsala can be paired beautifully with bolder shades from the same color family.
Kristen Stewart
While Pantone’s 2020 Color of the Year could hardly be described as “punk”, one of the celebrities wearing Marsala made it work for the Met Ball in 2020. The Met Gala’s theme was “Punk: Chaos to Couture”, and Kristen Stewart perfectly captured it with a Stella McCartney jumpsuit with lace detailing.
Naomi Watts
At the 2020 Golden Globes, Naomi Watts perfectly pulled off the shade in a dramatic Zac Posen gown. With a keyhole detail in the front, an open back and a dramatic train, the gown showcased the luxe potential of Marsala.
Miranda Kerr
In 2020, Miranda Kerr was also one of the celebrities wearing Marsala, Pantone’s 2020 Color of the Year. Wearing a Zuhair Murad gown at the InStyle Golden Globe Awards After Party in 2020, Kerr pulled off the look with plenty of sophistication.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus
Just like Zac Posen, Vera Wang also put the shade on the red carpet more than once in the past few years. Julia Louis-Dreyfus wore a custom Marsala gown at the 2020 Emmy Awards, where she picked up the first of her three awards as “Best Actress in a Comedy” for “Veep”.
Emma Stone
Even though she called it “purple”, Emma Stone was also one of the celebrities wearing Marsala, Pantone’s 2020 Color of the Year, in 2020. The actress opted for a dramatic Lanvin gown at the 2020 Golden Globes, and the two-toned dress also featured raspberry paneling.
