Held at The Forum on Sunday, August 24, in Inglewood, California, the 2020 MTV VMAs didn’t disappoint when it comes to outrageous fashion. From extreme plunges to very high slits, the taste factor was all over the place, as usual.
Check out the 2020 MTV VMA red carpet trends and find out which are definitely wearable and which fail even by the standards of one of the most risky events of the summer.
Crop Tops
Still going strong after making a splash at the 2020 Teen Choice Awards, crop tops showed up all over the red carpet. Miley Cyrus rocked a black leather one with leather pants, an ensemble from the Alexandre Vauthier Fall 2020 Couture collection.
Victoria Justice opted for a white Alice + Olivia tube top and a black high-low skirt. Jourdan Dunn took the look to the extreme with a tiny black tube top and long skirt from the Balmain Resort 2020 collection.
Extremely High Slits
Ever since Angelina Jolie made waves at the 2020 Academy Awards, other stars have tried to emulate the viral high slit with their own interpretations. The almost unwearable slit was one of the 2020 MTV VMA red carpet trends, with Rita Ora rocking a Donna Karan Atelier red silk gown, Jennifer Lopez taking it just as far in her silver Charbel Zoe dress, and even Kylie Jenner going for it in a flowy black satin gown.
Pink Pants
Chloë Grace Moretz opted for a demure, but still stylish look with Louis Vuitton Resort 2020 pink pants, paired with an embellished magenta top. Gwen Stefani was also a fan of pink pants, wearing one of her own L.A.M.B. ensembles in pink and black.

Extreme Plunges
Even since giving birth, Kim Kardashian has been even more daring with her tops and her sensibility turned into one of the most risky 2020 MTV VMA red carpet trends. Kim wore a Balmain Resort 2020 dress with an attention-grabbing deep plunge. Demi Lovato gave her a run for her money in a long-sleeved Lanvin gown.
Sheer Paneling
Even though it’s losing its appeal on the runway, sheer paneling still seems to be going strong as a summer trend. Kendall Jenner walked the red carpet in a black jumpsuit with a sheer top, wearing a simple black top underneath. While TV host Renee Bargh used paneling more traditionally, actress Alexandra Shipp took a risk with a sheer dress that looked like a mini with a very low, flared out, and embroidered skirt.
Barely There Dresses
Jennifer Lopez’s sparkling silver dress featured both daring cutouts and a high slit, but Amber Rose took one of the 2020 MTV VMA red carpet trends to its attention-grabbing extreme. The model joined Wiz Khalifa on the red carpet wearing a chain dress that barely covered anything.
Bodysuits
Making a splash on the VMA red carpet, Taylor Swift wore a long-sleeved, but very short bodysuit from the Mary Katrantzou Resort 2020 collection. With a less than perfect fit, she didn’t make anyone’s best dressed list, and neither did Charli XCX, who similarly failed to impress in a one-sleeved, yellow and black bodysuit.
Cutout Dresses
Cutouts were definitely one of the 2020 MTV VMA red carpet trends, and two of the most interesting interpretations were seen on Iggy Azalea and actress Holland Roden. The Australian singer went for a silver gown from Atelier Versace’s Spring 2020 collection with very small cutouts at the center of the bodice. In a white Milly dress, Roden rocked the crop top trend without actually wearing separates and added mesh overlay to the trend.

Stud Overload
Trying to channel Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s 2020 matching denim moment, Katy Perry and rapper Riff Raff certainly stood out on the red carpet with a lot of studding and beading on their Versace ensembles. Rocking the high-slit trend, singer Becky G also opted for an excessively studded skirt.
Sophisticated Black Dresses
Glamour still managed to find a place among the 2020 MTV VMA red carpet trends. Beyoncé rocked a black, sequined Nicolas Jebran Couture gown, while Chanel Iman wore a Balmain woven leather dress. Nina Dobrev added a touch of color to the all black look with a gown from the Zuhair Murad Resort 2020 collection.
