Layering
Every runway show includes a little layering, but there’s definitely a big trend coming up next spring according to the collections shown at the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week. Layering, along with draped, pleated and folded fabrics make a big impact on the runway, especially in neutrals and softer shades.
Rag & Bone, Rosetta and The Row, the luxury brand from Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, all featured plenty of cool layering for spring.
White on White
If there’s one main color that leads the pack among Spring 2020 trends from New York Fashion Week, it’s definitely white. Combined with the layering trend, white on white made a huge splash in collections from Prabal Gurung, BCBG Max Azria, DKNY and Victoria Beckham. Crisp and clean whites, with strong lines, are going to be one of the major spring and summer trends next year.
Sportswear
Making gym clothes look high-fashion may be difficult, but quite a few brands were up for the task at the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week. L.A.M.B. and Lacoste always had a sporty vibe, but it became even stronger this season, while Alexander Wang and DKNY really turned iconic sportswear into very wearable and trendy pieces.
Gingham
If white is the color of next year, then gingham is the upcoming print of choice for fashionistas. It’s one of the strongest Spring 2020 trends from New York Fashion Week, since it was featured in a lot of collections, in many different color combinations, but particularly in black and white. Michael Kors, Diane von Furstenberg, Altuzarra and Oscar de la Renta all embraced gingham, putting an end to the year long domination of flower prints.
Oversized Jackets
It may not be the freshest trend, but the oversized jacket is still hanging around for Spring/Summer 2020, and it was a staple in many collections. In fact, it’s getting even bolder, going down to calf-length. Jason Wu, Thom Browne and Theory featured the most exciting spins on the oversized jacket, but many designers featured countless variations of it, including a sleeveless version.
Flared Pants
Skinny jeans are officially dead, and flared pants inspired by retro bell-bottoms are among the biggest Spring 2020 trends from New York Fashion Week. Coach, Derek Lam, Rebecca Taylor and Diane von Furstenberg all jumped on board with flared pants that are perfectly tailored at the hips.
Knits
Sweaters might end up as one of the biggest trends next spring, since special knits for warmer weather took over the runway. The sophisticated knits that showed up during shows from Victoria Beckham and Tory Burch prove that with the right blend, sweaters can become a cool and comfortable spring look.
Swarovski Crystals
Leading the pack at the most trendy embellishment of the season, Swarovski crystals have are also among the Spring 2020 trends from New York Fashion Week, featured in new and interesting ways. Creatures of the Wind, Prabal Gurung and Wes Gordon all featured exquisite new ways to incorporate Swarovski crystals into their clothing, but Nonoo was one step ahead, integrating them in 3D-printed pins for spring.

After ‘90s inspired crop tops rules the summer, many designers are taking the look one step further, with revealing bandeau tops for Spring 2020. Alexander Wang, DKNY, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and Diane von Furstenberg featured bandeaus in their collection in a variety of fresh ways.
Lace Up Shoes
When it comes to shoes, the laced up look is definitely one of the big Spring 2020 trends from New York Fashion Week. From flat sandals to pumps with long laces, this footwear trend showed up on the runway in collections from Michael Kors, Tibi, Cynthia Rowley, Nonoo, and Thakoon.
