The NYFW fall 2020 edition is in full swing and we’re getting to see more and more of the influences that will be shaping the cold months of 2020. If up until this point we’ve seen a lot of somber tones and a rather timid approach when it came to eye-catching prints, some of the collections spotted recently changed our perspective.
Inspired by the great outdoors or simply by fascinating cultures, these lines manage to bring a fascinating maximalist perspective on the fall/winter 2020 fashion trends, even though it still feels a little premature to talk about the subject.
Here are some of the influences some of the biggest names in the industry are putting forward in the upcoming months:
NYFW Fall 2020: Alexander Wang Fall 2020 RTW Collection
The Alexander Wang fall 2020 collection was inspired by the idea of survival. “We started thinking a lot about extreme conditions and the great outdoors—like, mountain climbing and camping. It was really about taking that idea of survival to an urban landscape,” the designer stated before the show. How does clothing fit into the idea? Well, the designer sent a multitude of cool coats and comfy boots down the runway. For simplifying purposes, handbags and purses were often replaced by multiple pockets. Lots of layering was seen as the best way to keep warm and boxy shapes were often preferred to more fluid silhouettes. Even with all these practical measures, the designer didn’t abandon statement making prints and patterns and opted for bold tones to make his new creations stand out. NYFW Fall 2020: DKNY Fall 2020 RTW Collection
The inspiration for the DKNY fall 2020 collection is found right in the label’s name. Yes, Donna Karan took inspiration from New York for its latest line, which was presented by several real people in addition to models, and was watched carefully by celebs like Victoria Justice and Rita Ora. Cheerful and edgy, the new line brought an interesting mixture of pieces and trends. Statement coats, faux fur, varsity jackets and sweatshirts, leather pants and skirts were just some of the alternatives the brand put forward in the show. NYFW Fall 2020: Diane Von Furstenberg Fall 2020 RTW Collection
The Diane von Furtenberg fall 2020 collection titled ‘Bohemian Wrapsody’ marks the label’s 40th anniversary. The festive nature of the event seems to have had a great influence on the new line if we are to judge by the label’s description for the new line: ”A glamorous vagabond…she’s on the run with her dreams and colors.” The statement can very well be taken at face value if we consider the multitude of eclectic motifs and prints that made the label’s new creations stand out. The show started on a rather somber note from a chromatic point of view, however, as the show progressed, the label expanded its color palette and included gorgeous royal blue, strong fuchsia, bordeaux and orange tones in addition to luxurious gold hues to the new line. NYFW Fall 2020: Mara Hoffman Fall 2020 RTW Collection
The Mara Hoffman fall 2020 creations were inspired by the Northern African culture, landscape and textiles. The label, which is known for its vivacious prints didn’t disappoint bringing a hefty dose of stunning motifs and a variety of eye-catching bohemian ensembles that instantly command attention, though more understated options were also available. Flowy maxi dresses, caftans, lovely topcoats, fringed ponchos or gorgeous sweatshirts are just some of the options the label brings to our attention for the months to come. NYFW Fall 2020: Tommy Hilfiger Fall 2020 RTW Collection
Tommy Hilfiger is definitely a designer that knows how to reflect each season. After a beach-themed spring 2020 line, the Tommy Hilfiger fall/winter 2020-2020 collection reflected the mood of the cold months thanks to the artificial snow-covered runway. Though the designer didn’t go as far as to think about survival like Alexander Wang did, he did take his inspiration from the great outdoors and consequently brought options that could theoretically work for outdoor activities. The line consisted mainly of plaid shirts, patchwork style denim, shearling parkas and bomber jackets, cable knit ponchos and turtleneck sweaters, cool beanie hats, wedge boots and cut-out cowboy boots.
