Blue
Royal blue was a strong presence at London Fashion Week AW14, but all kinds of strong blue made the runway, from electric shades (Roksanda Ilincic) to navy (Topshop Unique).
Following New York Fashion Week, royal blue is turning out to be a top contender for color of the season, especially if it’s paired with oxblood red, like in the Roksanda Ilincic collection.
Slouchy and Unstructured
While some designers continued to present strong shapes, one of the best trends from London Fashion Week was the unstructured look, applied to everything from dresses to coats. If you don’t like dropped shoulders, you might want to skip this trend seen on the runway in Issa and Giles collections among many others.
Layering for a Matchy Matchy Look
One of the biggest fashion rules that seems to be on its way out, the matchy matchy outfit made a big impression in London with a cool new twist: layering. Matching layers may not be the way to got for a full outfit, but a coat and scarf look could become the freshest fall trend. The look was featured in collections by Burberry, Giles, Peter Pilotto and Temperley.
Sheer Organza
If you like the sheer trend that’s still going strong, you can wear it in a new way in the later part of the year, for a softer touch. Organza and similar fabrics have been used for sheer detailing by many brands, from Erdem to Burberry and it might turn out to be one of the best trends from London Fashion Week AW14.
Maximalism
When it isn’t done right, maximalism amounts to little more than kitsch. Many designers have tackled the trend and they’ve managed to bring it to a new level. Complex layering with plenty of textures and eye catching prints are the way to go when it comes to maximalism, as seen in collections from Christopher Kane, Temperley and Peter Pilotto.
Bomber Jackets
It’s been around for quite a few seasons, but the bomber jacket seems to a favorite for designers who keep bringing it back in new interpretations. If unstructured coats are not your thing, the bomber jacket is probably one of the best trends from London Fashion Week AW14, and it was featured in collections from Jonathan Saunders, House of Holland and Giles.
Geometric Shapes, Prints and Textures
Geometry seems to be a big inspiration for designers, whether it’s prints, shapes or textures. Bold prints with geometric patterns were seen on the runway at the Jonathan Saunders and Roksanda Ilincic shows, but the biggest revelation when it comes to geometry is Christopher Kane’s 3D origami folds have been seen on stunning dresses.
Embellishments
It might not be as well defined as some of the other best trends from London Fashion Week AW14, but embellishments have been featured a lot on the runway, breaking up otherwise monochrome pieces. From sequins to beading or even delicate embroidery, the details seen in Ashish, Erdem and Michael van der Ham show that small details are a must this fall.
Folksy and Asian Inspired Prints
Fashionistas who aren’t crazy about bold geometric prints can rejoice because that’s not the only big trend when it comes to prints. If you like folklore inspired prints, in folksy fabrics and with artisan detailing, Burberry and Mary Katrantzou have it covered. For an Asian inspired print, look to collections from Erdem, Giles, Michael van der Ham and Peter Pilotto.
Animal Skin Textures
One of the best trends from London Fashion Week AW14 will be available this fall in plenty of faux leather variations, so take a hint from Felder Felder and Tom Ford and let your wild side show with these exotic textures.
