Getting ready for a red carpet event sometimes involves a whole team of hairstylists, but some celebrities prefer the DIY approach. Some A-listers style their own hair, others cut it, and some even color it on their own.
Find out more about the biggest celebrities who do their own hair, from their reasons to some useful tips and tricks. From Queen Bey and Blake Lively to Janelle Monáe and even Kate Moss, here are the stars who aren’t afraid to experiment with their hair at home.
Beyoncé
Even though she can get an appointment right away with the most sought after hairstylists in the world, Beyoncé loves doing her own makeup for different events, and she’s also open to experimenting with her hair, from different cuts to coloring techniques.
“I love playing around with highlights or bleaching the tips. I can cut and style my own hair,” Beyoncé told People.
Helen Mirren
Dame Helen Mirren is an Academy Award winner, but she’s also one of the celebrities who do their own hair. “For the last 20 to 30 years, I’ve only ever been to the hairdressers if I’ve had to go for a part I’ve been playing. I simply put my hair in a ponytail and cut across the top – it creates natural layers and just falls right. I colour it myself too,” she told The Mirror.
Janelle Monáe
The singer’s iconic pompadour wasn’t created by an experienced hairstylist. Janelle Monáe loves her natural hair, and she’s 100% in charge of her look. “Well folks, sorry to say this, but I do my own styling and my own tangled-up hair! I never like to inconvenience anyone I don’t have to. I mean, I may not do the best job, but if I can do it, I would just rather it be that way,” she told her fans on MySpace.

Carrie Underwood
Many celebrities who do their own hair are also in charge of their own makeup. For Carrie Underwood, being in charge of her look before performing is a relaxing experience that she enjoys. “You can do things you wouldn’t really do. You can put glitter on your eyes. Big hair. The bigger, the better. It’s fun. It’s a nice relaxing time, a calm before the storm, if you will,” the singer told Styelist.
Blake Lively
The perfect beach waves that she often shows off on the red carpet aren’t created by a hairstylist. Blake Lively in in charge of her own hair, from air-drying it to putting it in a ballerina bun to get the right texture. The actress has also told Glamour magazine that she takes care of split ends without a trip to the salon, by braiding her hair and cutting off any strands that stick out.
Kate Moss
She may not be in charge of her hairstyle all the time, but Kate Moss can also claim she’s one of the celebrities who do their own hair. In fact, the fringe trend she launched in 2020 was the result of a late night experiment. “I got bored one night and cut it – with kitchen scissors,” she admitted at the launch of her first Topshop collection.
Corinne Bailey Rae
The British singer-songwriter also keeps her hair natural, and she has the perfect tricks to get a gorgeous effect. “I plait the front section, then one in the crown, and two at the sides. I leave that for a day or a day and a half. When I take them down, it’s in those loose kinks from the plaits, but it’s still a bit wet, so then my natural curl kind of comes back in a bit,” she told Curly Nikki.
Tori Spelling
As a busy mom of three, Tori Spelling also became one of the celebrities who do their own hair, when she decided to make a change. “I chopped it all off myself last nite at midnite. #FutureHairStylist #ShortHairDontCare #MultitaskingMama,” Spelling wrote on Twitter when showing off her new hairstyle.
