Matrixyl – The Anti-Aging Miracle Ingredient?

The miracle anti aging ingredients list features a new name: Matrixyl, an anti aging ingredient that is said to boost the skin’s ability to produce collagen. Botox and retinols might not be your only weapons against aging. Researchers from Reading University have recently found out that the chemical can actually double the amount of collagen the skin produces. If this sounds like a good news, the next one is even better: you may already be using it. How’s that possible? Well, though the hype around Matrixyl’s anti aging properties is just beginning, the ingredient itself was patented in 2000 by a French company.

The first paper about the Matrixyl’s role in boosting collagen production was released by scientists working for Procter&Gamble 8 years ago. They ran a trial for three months to see if Matrixyl had any measurable effect it terms of improving the skin’s condition. The study involved 93 women with ages between 35 to 55. They were asked to use a moisturizer using Matrixyl on one side of the face and the same moisturizer without the ingredient on the other. The study found that there were significant improvements and a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles on the part of the face treated with the enriched moisturizer.

According to Sederma, the company that patented the compound, Matrixyl’s benefits include: decreased skin roughness due to the compound’s ability to strengthen the connective tissues of the skin, decreased wrinkles depth, thickened skin due to the additional amount of collagen produced. This is important because it makes the skin less sensitive to allergies and skin diseases. No side effects have been reported yet.

Furthermore, many products on the market already contain it. Why haven’t you heard about it? The most likely explanation is that labels are advertising ingredients which seem unique to the label rather than one that is found in many products from competing brands. It might just be as simple as Marketing strategies. So, could your favorite moisturizer already contain this beneficial ingredient? It’s quite possible. The ingredient is used in products from various brands from Olay to luxury labels like Chanel and Dior, so be sure to check the ingredients on the back of the products before putting them in your shopping basket. You will be doing your skin and your wallet a huge favor.
