Chunking
This is a popular and easy way to color several sections of your hair. Its aim is to highlight wider portions, this way you can infuse several extreme or classic shades to your natural hair color.
Many people use it when they want to change their look radically. It is perfect both for short and long hair. You can opt for a complete or a partial (just around the face) chunking.
You’ll find several coloring kits in your store, however if you want to go for sure, contact a real hair stylist. They’ll have special caps, with wide holes on them, first they randomly pull out some strands from the area you would like to highlight. Then they color them in the desired shades.
Hair Painting
Hair painting is usually done at home, it’s easy and practical, all you need is a painting brush. 2 days before the highlighting, wash your hair using shampoo and conditioners specially designed for your hair type.
A clarifying shampoo will be of great help when you try to disentangle your strands. You can test the color effect on one single lock then continue if it looks good. Read the instructions from the home-coloring kit and follow them carefully.
Foil Highlighting
As the name implies this method uses foils to separate and then carefully wrap your strands. This is done in order to protect the rest of your hair from coloring. Many hair salons practice foil highlighting and even more people experiment with this at home.
The process is the following: your locks are parted, then the hair dye is applied on them, finally using the foil your strands are wrapped up until the processing time. In many cases clips are used to make sure that the foil holds the strand properly.
The first section in highlighting is always the most visible one, you have to make sure that the strands are properly dyed. You might visit a hair salon for guaranteed success but you can also try it at home, ask a friend to help you.
Lowlights
Lowlights are in fact the opposite of highlighting. In fact it means the coloring of strands with darker shades then the natural hair color is.
People with light hair colors tend to opt for this type of highlighting. The point is to choose a color that is at most 3 shades darker than your natural hair color, avoid creating an extremely artificial look. This method will give depth and volume to your hair.
