Acne is caused by hormones which increase during adolescence. Hormones cause sebaceous glands to produce more sebum, that clog the pores and produce pimples, blackheads and lumps. Acne ca appear on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms.

Usually acne clears up after a few years even with no treatment, but in some cases acne needs attention and dermatological treatment, while untreated acne can leave permanent face scars.

Acne that appears before the fist period is called prepubertal acne, but when pus lumps are formed it is called cystic acne.

Childbirth, menopause or stopping the pill can also trigger the formation of acne in adults.

Acne is not caused by certain foods or by not washing your face, although it is recommended you do so daily, to keep the pores clean.

Tips for acne skin

If you have acne try to use cosmetics as little as possible and use oil free, water based moisturizers and make-up. Remember to remove your make-up every night before going to bed with a mild cleanser.

Do not pick or squeeze your pimples, see a dermatologist. They will recommend the right treatment for you.

Treatments may vary and can imply the use of creams, antibiotics, birth control pills, microdermabrazion, chemical peeling or corticosteroids injections.

Remember to always use proper skin care even if under treatment.
