See Ashton Kutcher’s ‘Dating Video’ in which he plays the role of a bunch of guys ready to conquer the hearts of millions of girls. Whether you’re fond of the adorable Indian accent of the 39-year-old Bollywood producer ‘Raj’ or you would like to meet ‘Swordfish’ a real Southern guy wearing a bandana this campaign is definitely for you.
In addition to these super-fun characters Ashton also decided to breathe life into the personality of ‘Darl’ who is actually the spitting image of Karl Lagerfeld and ‘Nigel’ who actually stands for Russell Brand. Finally the actor returns to his own identity and joins the pack of guys ready to find love on the internet. The video was created for the Popchips brand and triggered a series of controversies.
Ashton and the whole campaign was accused of racism due to Raj’s character who accentuates some of the worst stereotypes. Saying things like he’s searching for “the most delicious thing on the planet” and then he adds that “like Kardashian hot, I would give that dog a bone” all offended numerous cultural groups.
A spokesperson of the brand told MTV that, “The new popchips worldwide dating video and ad campaign featuring four characters was created to provoke a few laughs and was never intended to stereotype or offend anyone.[…]At popchips we embrace all types of shapes, flavors and colors, and appreciate all snackers, no matter their race or ethnicity. We hope people can enjoy this in the spirit it was intended”.
