Emma Watson poses for Net-a-Porter’s The Edit latest issue and talks about Livia Firth’s design challenge (Green Carpet Challenge (GCC)). The 23 year old star poses in five gorgeous dresses made by Burberry Prorsum, Christopher Kane, Victoria Beckham, Erdem and Roland Mouret. Needless to say, she looks absolutely amazing in these chic alternatives.
The “Harry Potter” actress is no stranger to sustainable fashion. In 2020, she visited a Bangladesh factory as part of the People Tree campaign she created and witnessed firsthand the effect that fair trade makes on the people’s lives. Furthermore, around the same time she collaborated with Alberta Ferretti for a similar initiative.
Ever since, she has began questioning the current state of affairs: “I can’t wrap my head around why ethical clothing is a speciality and not a base standard. Why is it special to have something you know wasn’t made under terrible conditions by a 12-year-old girl for 20 pence an hour?”
She also began to discover how difficult it is to change mentalities and adopt the right tone for these important conversations: “It’s hard to talk about this stuff without sounding preachy.” Furthermore, even making a change in her own life proves quite challenging and rather unrealistic considering the fact that there aren’t too many sustainable retailers to choose from:
“I’ve always had this huge problem. I would love to wear garments that are ethically sourced, but there aren’t enough options for me to be able to do that realistically.”
Perhaps the most recent example which proves the star’s statement is the Emmy Awards 2020 red carpet options which definitely illustrated the lack of sustainable elegant choices. Speaking about such occasions, Emma confessed that such occasions make her quite uncomfortable:
“On the red carpet, I’m usually in so much discomfort – my shoes are uncomfortable, I can’t breathe in the dress. I don’t compromise like that in my everyday style.”
