Gorgeous Kelly Clarkson is all smiles on the August 2020 cover of Lucky magazine. The 30-year-old songstress looks stunning wearing jeans, a simple top and a red blazer. Clarkson, who is currently working on a new show called Duets, sits down for a little chat and dishes on her favorite wardrobe pieces, winning American Idol and celebrity. Well, after working with several managers and producers, Kelly seems to have finally found the perfect people who take her as she is. Clarkson’s fifth studio album, Stronger, was released on October 24, 2020. “The hardest thing about being in this business is just being able to be yourself,” she says. “People act like there’s this one set of rules to follow to be a pop star, and I think, Well, you say I’m a pop star, so maybe that’s not true.”
Clarkson lives in Nashville yet she comes to L.A. to work. “When people complain about living in Los Angeles, I’m like, Why do you?, she says. And even though you might believe that she only hangs around with super-popular people, most of Kelly’s friends are not celebrities. In fact, the only famous people she spends time with are Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert and McEntire, “who’s kind of family.” “I mean, I love her,” she says, “but her stepson is my boyfriend.”
Talking to Lucky, Clarkson also shares a few thing about her private life and her new boyfriend. “Oh, there’s all these rumors that I’m a lesbian,” she says. “I have a boyfriend now, Brandon Blackstock, my manager Narvel’s son, Reba McEntire’s stepson? I just had my 30th birthday and we went turkey shooting. It’s what I wanted to do, so we went.”
When it comes to fashion, Kelly admits she’s not the type of girl for whom it takes forever to get dressed. “Even though I’m a pop singer, I really have more the life of a country singer,” she says. “I put on the Hank Williams and the Patsy Cline and the Rosemary Clooney on vinyl — I’m not trying to be some cool indie-rock person, I just love the way it sounds — and throw on a T-shirt and jeans. In Texas, we practically come out of the womb in jeans.”
On Duets, Kelly Clarkson, R&B star John Legend, soul singer Robin Thicke and country rocker Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland travel around the U.S. auditioning new talents and then compete each week with the people they choose. Speaking about the show, Clarkson told Lucky that, “Last week, one of the Duets contestants was crying. She said, ‘I gave everything up to come here, and I’m scared.’ I thought back to Idol and how I didn’t know much except that I was scared, and that I had nothing left to lose. I told her, ‘That fear? It’s your power in this situation. Use it, because it’s your fire.’”
