Miley Cyrus Talks About Her VMAs Performance

Miley Cyrus’ performance at the 2020 VMAs made headlines and got people talking for days after the event, but the star kept a surprisingly low profile… up until now. There were statements that she “couldn’t be happier with the performance” released shortly after the event but not much else. However, Miley finally spoke about the VMAs performance in a brief interview for MTV and shed light on the reasoning behind the intensely criticized number.

So, why did she decide to show up in raunchy lingerie, use a giant foam hand as a prop and give a visual representation of “twerking” (a word recently added to the Oxford dictionary, btw)? To make history, obviously. “You’re wanting to make history. Me and Robin [Thicke] the whole time said ‘You know you are about to make history right now?’”, she stated adding that she’s delighted that her duet got people talking: “It is an amazing thing that I think now it is three days later and people are still talking about it.”

According to her, all she did was follow the footsteps of Britney and Madonna, who caused similar controversy in their time of glory: “You know now… you know what’s happened. Madonna’s done it, Britney’s done it. Every VMAs performance, anyone that performs…that’s what you are looking for.”

She also got the chance to respond to some of her critics: “They’re over thinking it. You’re thinking more about it than when I did it. Like I didn’t even think about it because that is just me.” Does negative publicity bother her? Nope, not in the least. “I don’t pay attention to the negative because I have seen this play out. How many times have we seen this play out in pop music?”

This might not have been the first time a pop artist prepares a racy show, but it sure was one step beyond what everyone expected, given the fact that she received more attention than the global crisis in Syria. Now, whether all the shock and controversy will actually help boost the sales of her new album “Bangerz” remains to be seen.
