Last Saturday, Rihanna attended a basketball match in Los Angeles between the Los Angeles Clippers and the Oklahoma City Thunder. The singer was seated near Los Angeles Police Commission President Steve Soboroff, who asked to take a picture with her. “ I asked her to take a selfie with me wearing LAPD wristbands to show support for our officers. Rihanna took the phone from me and wanted to take the selfie herself!,” he recalled.
However, shortly after taking the selfie, the singer accidentally dropped his iPhone on the Staples Center’s hardwood, shattering phone’s screen. Rihanna was visibly embarrassed by the incident and she even apologized to Steve Soboroff on Twitter stating ”Sorry I broke your phone @SteveSoboroff :)” . However, her actions after the embarrassing accident proved that she truly has a big heart.
The singer announced on Monday that she will donate no less than $25,000 of her own money to the Los Angeles Police Department’s cadet program to help the families of cadets killed in the line of duty.
Moreover, the singer has agreed to sign the officer’s phone and even let him put it for auction on eBay. The phone Rihanna cracked carries star’s autograph as well as her apology – “Sorry! I ♥ LAPD. Rihanna.’ and it turned out to be a very big hit. The highest bit was $66,500 and that is a lot of money for a cracked iPhone!
What started out as an awkward situation, eventually turned into an amazing opportunity to help others, as in addition to the star’s generous donation, all the proceeds from the auction go to charity. According to eBay, half of the proceeds from the auction will go towards the LAPD Cadet program crisis, while the other half of the money raised will go to the Los Angeles Police Memorial Foundation, to support the families of the fallen officers.
