Shay Mitchell is Seventeen‘s gorgeous cover girl for the magazine’s Prom 2020 issue. In the accompanying interview, the ‘Pretty Little Liars’ star talks about her own prom, offers her advice on how to have your best night ever, and dishes on her prom budget-conscious style secrets.

On how to pick the perfect prom dress, Shay says that, “For my prom I really wanted to wear a bright color — something that was going to pop and stand out. [You have to think about] how you are going to shine in your photo and how you’re going to look different.”
The 24-year-old lovely actress confesses that she went solo to her prom. Even though it is rather hard to believe this, she explains it all inside the magazine. “I was dating my first boyfriend in high school for a long time, and we broke up before the prom. I hadn’t met anyone else that I really wanted to go with, and my friends have always been amazing. So I went with my friends and got a million photos with them,” Shay told Seventeen.
Inside the magazine’s Prom 2102 issue, Shay Mitchell also shares a few secrets on how to style on a budget. “My dress was about $175, and for accessories I went through my mom’s closet. The earrings, bracelet and rings I wore were all hers.” Shay’s one splurge? Her shoes! “I bought nice, crystal shoes — you have to get something that makes you really excited. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but I really did feel like a princess putting my shoes on,” she explained.
The adorable actress recalls that she had to face a hair disaster on the prom night as her mom curled her hair too tight. “I washed it again and we had to redo it with a curling iron. And I had to redo my makeup because of the tears! I was like, ‘I should have gotten it done professionally!’ — but my mom came through,” Shay told the magazine.
On whether she asks guys out, Shay admits that, “In high school, I knew the guys, so I would have asked. Now I’m the shy girl! I see a cute guy in Starbucks and I’m like…Oh..Okay, and I walk out. But who knows? Maybe I will ask somebody on a date soon!” What about her dream prom date in the present? “Ryan Gosling. He is so cute and funny. It’s important to have a date who can make you laugh, not someone you’re going to feel nervous around,” the actress confesses.
