From relationships that only lasted a few months to a few divorces after many years together, plenty of celebrities decided to move on in 2020. Some were the target of more speculation than others, especially if they ended badly.
Check out some of the biggest celebrity breakups of 2020, from Chris Martin’s split from Gwyneth Paltrow and his short-lived relationship with Jennifer Lawrence to a few other couples who finalized their divorce this year.
Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Martin
Their breakup was just as sudden as the news of their relationship. After Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow’s “conscious uncoupling”, the singer dated the actress for a few months, but they were only photographed together once.
None of them acknowledged the relationship, but that didn’t stop tabloids from speculating about Gwyneth’s involvement in the split.
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon
After separating in May, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon are working one the details of their divorce. Apparently, the trouble started when Nick bragged about sleeping with Kim Kardashian on Howard Stern’s radio show. Nick and Mariah haven’t finalized their split because they’re still trying to work out the custody details for the twins, but theirs is definitely one of the most celebrity breakups of 2020.
Kate Hudson and Matthew Bellamy
They started dating in spring 2020, announced their engagement in April 2020, but Kate Hudson and Muse singer Matthew Bellamy won’t be married anytime soon. The two have a son together, but they decided to call it quits this year. Speculation started after Kate stopped wearing her engagement ring, but the news was only confirmed in December.

Bruce and Kris Jenner
While other couples seemed solid, Kris and Bruce Jenner’s decision to divorce came after an 11 month long separation. It’s one of the most talked about celebrity breakups of 2020, with plenty of rumors about Bruce’s gender status. Divorcing after 23 years, the two will share custody of 17 year old daughter Kylie Jenner.
Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo
After the two singers seemed to have an amicable split, the cracks started showing. In September, Derulo opened up about the reason for the split on On Air with Ryan Seacrest, saying that the relationship became “unhealthy” towards the end. Jordin worked it out by slamming her ex in a remix of Drake’s “How Bout Now”, singing that “You probably don’t remember half of the s–t that I did for ya.”
Robin Thicke and Paula Patton
Even though he recorded an entire album for his wife Paula Patton, Robin Thicke hasn’t managed to make her take him back after they split in February. Theirs was one of the most discussed celebrity breakups of 2020, and it ended with Patton officially filing for divorce in October.
Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa
While she was thanking Kim Kardashian in 2020 for being a “home wrecker”, because the reality star’s actions led to Amber Rose dating Wiz Khalifa and finding happiness, things didn’t last for the model and the rapper. Rose filed for divorce after just one year of marriage, and asked for full custody of the couple’s son, Sebastian, who was born in February 2020.
Lana Del Rey and Barrie-James O’Neill
After three years together, Lana Del Rey ended her engagement to rocker Barrie-James O’Neill, in one of the least controversial celebrity breakups of 2020. The singer told Canadian magazine Fashion that: “I’m a dark character and he very is an even darker character than I am. Trying to get some consistency and some normality within the dynamic of that relationship has been impossible.”
Téa Leoni and David Duchovny
In one of the least surprising celebrity breakups of 2020, David Duchovny and Téa Leoni finally ended their 17 year marriage with official divorce papers in June. The two married in 1997, but split in 2020, when the actor underwent treatment for sex addiction. Even though they managed to reconnect, their second split, in 2020, was final, but it took them 3 years to actually come to terms with all the custody and alimony details for the divorce.
