Every single one of Dries Van Noten’s collections is an amazing adventure. Yes, one exciting escapade in the world of prints, textures and oh-so-cool combinations. Once again, the Belgian designer manages to create a jaw-dropping line for spring 2020. Renowned for the particular use of patterns, Van Noten always makes the impossible look so possible and even unbelievably gorgeous.
“Of course, here and there, pushing the boundaries of what is acceptable is also what I find very interesting,” Van Noten told Interview Magazine. “For me, it’s really like, okay, if you go far with the unexpected materials and unexpected proportions or volumes, then keep the colors quite simple and straightforward for men,” he says. However, the designer also admits that when it comes to limits, these are not always a bad thing. “For me, restrictions are not always negative,” he says. “Restrictions can push creativity. I like restrictions.”
The new Dries Van Noten spring 2020 collection is characterized by a high dose of plaid. Okay, this must sound boring, but the Belgian designer put his creativity to the test and reinterpreted this famous pattern resulting into some pretty stunning goodies. “I wanted to go back to having fun with clothes,” Van Noten said. “It’s everything that I love. It has that kind of menswear/women’s-wear kind of grungy, spontaneous feel.”
The line features silk plaid blouses, floral printed pants, peplum vests, masculine blazers and jackets, 1930s-inspired floral-printed slip dresses, ethereal sheer ground-skimming gowns, and rosette-embellished skirts. Oh, and let’s not forget the accessories that beautifully completed the outfits. There were sexy printed pumps and mules, chic plaid clutches, round oversize sunglasses, and chain necklaces. Effortlessly hip, wearable and surprisingly elegant and refined, Dries Van Noten’s spring 2020 collection has a couture grunge flare. “Contrasts,” Van Noten said. “Menswear with womenswear but more spontaneous this time, a more thrown together approach.”
