Called “the hottest product of the year” by Adweek Magazine in 1988, fanny packs are generally associated with the ugliest trends of the ‘90s, but designers keep trying to bring them back.

Many look to the actor for style tips, at least when it comes to hair, and Jared Leto seems to be a big fan of the fanny pack.
He posted a picture of himself shirtless on Instagram wearing a fanny pack, and kept working the accessory even with his new neon green hairstyle, which he adopted to play the Joker in “The Suicide Squad”. Leto even sold fanny packs on his website for a while.
Kanye West
While many celebrities wearing fanny packs are doing it for practical reasons, Kanye is probably attracted to the risk of taking this ugly accessory and turning it into high fashion. Designers like Diane Von Furstenberg and Reed Krakoff have been pushing the belted satchel since 2020, and Kanye might consider it avantgarde.
Matthew McConaughey
Leto and McConaughey may have bonded over their love of fanny packs on the set of the Academy Award winning movie “Dallas Buyers Club”, because the actor has also proclaimed his unabashed love for the accessory. “I’m not afraid of the fanny pack. You gotta kinda put it on the side to make it look a little not as nerdy, but still, practicality wins out. I got so much gear in here that I don’t want in my pockets. They’ll come back – some decade from now,” McConaughey told CSN Houston.
Rihanna
While some appreciate the practicality, Rihanna was definitely not wearing the fanny pack to carry random things in it. She’s one of the celebrities wearing fanny packs while almost making it work. The singer was photographed more than once with the accessory. She paired a faux leather Joyrich The Cashflow Studded Fanny Pack with an all denim look and she matched her fanny pack to her look in Chanel at Paris Fashion Week in 2020.

Leonardo DiCaprio
The actor isn’t exactly renowned for his day to day style. While Leonardo DiCaprio can certainly turn it up on the red carpet, in his private life he looks a lot less put together. Joining the newsie cap as his accessory of choice, the fanny pack was spotted multiple times on the Academy Award winner. Leo even wore one at the back while biking.
Sarah Jessica Parker
Carrie Bradshaw was definitely a fan of the fanny pack and the actress who played her is also on the list of celebrities wearing fanny packs. In “Sex and the City”, Sarah Jessica Parker wore a Gucci fanny pack during season 4. The actress also took a big fashion risk at the 2020 the Art of the Pixel Gala, wearing a Chanel belted satchel over her Tracy Reese dress.
Will.i.am
The first artist to have his music played on Mars, Will.i.am also seems to be trying to make the fanny pack cool again. The Black Eyed Peas member might wear it more toward hip hip, and call it a “hip bag”, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s still wearing a fanny pack.

The “Horrible Bosses” star definitely embraced the fanny pack back in its heyday, and he had every reason to. When it first hit the mainstream, the ugly accessory was called “casual enough for the beach and classy enough for a fine dinner suit” by the Los Angeles Times.
