The NYFW Fall 2020 edition might have just began, but it has already provided a variety of interesting options and ideas as to what types of options might find their way into fashionistas’ closets in the second half of the year. Functionality seems to be a key factor that influenced the options designers are putting forward this year. Of course, the utilitarian vibe is interpreted differently across many brands, however, it seems like some trends already start contouring. The focus on leather and fur accents, the preference for geometric and abstract motifs and a concern with balancing feminine and masculine accents were among the main elements spotted so far, especially in these lines:
NYFW 2020: Coach Fall 2020 RTW Collection
The Coach fall 2020 collection marked an important milestone in the label’s history as it was the first collection done under the guidance of the British designer Stuart Vevers. For his first line for the luxury label, the designer chose a familiar starting point: traditional American sportswear, reinterpreted with cinematic references from “The Shining” and “Badlands.”
The designer focused on outwear with a strong utilitarian vibe. Among the memorable pieces from the new line were red-and-black houndstooth pieces, furry sheepskin coats, oversized toggle coats and even some interesting variations on moto and varsity jackets. Many of the same fabrics were used to create the accessories where the stars were shearling lined wedge boots, fringed cross body bags and platform sneakers. NYFW 2020: BCBG Max Azria Fall 2020 RTW Collection
The BCBG Max Azria fall 2020 collection was the label’s 25th anniversary collection, so the brand revisited some of the signature elements that helped the brand became a force to be reckoned with in the industry. Aside from the relaxed silhouettes, asymmetric hemlines and subtle geometric color-blocking, there was one element that felt new: fur. Over the past six years, the designers have abstained from using fur, but this time the they made it a central part of the new line, bringing fur coats and capes, fur-trimmed leather shirts or prominent fur collars, along with many shearling inserts. The color palette chosen for the new line was quite somber but accent tones of pale mauve, blush, burnt orange and mint helped lighten the overall vibe of the new pieces. NYFW 2020: Marissa Webb Fall 2020 RTW Collection
The Marissa Webb fall 2020 collection was also based on the idea of functionality and more specifically meeting the needs of busy women who need a wardrobe that works from 9 to 5 and beyond. “The collection is about feeling polished, feeling like you have a little edge, but at the same time not being constricted or confined, and not having to think a lot about it,” she stated and indeed, this is exactly what her line offered. The label went for clever proportions, opting for boxy pieces on top and simple bottoms, mixing masculine and feminine accents perfectly in the process. Among the most lust-worthy pieces from the new line were luxe leather jackets, trendy pantsuits, flowy dresses or sexy bright strappy pumps. View the full Marissa Webb fall 2020 collection!
NYFW 2020: Desigual Fall 2020 RTW Collection
The Desigual fall 2020 collection was one of the liveliest lines presented in the first days of the NYFW. The Spanish label is renowned for its ability to come up with stunning ensembles that seemed to radiate optimism and love given the fact that the models, including VS Angels Candice Swanepoel and Erin Heatherton, blew kisses at the audience. Graphic prints and motifs embellished every single option from the new line from body-hugging dresses to lovely coats and handbags that simply cannot go unnoticed. NYFW 2020: Richard Chai Love Fall 2020 RTW Collection
The Richard Chai Love fall 2020 collection is the perfect illustration of the boy-meets-girl aesthetic, bringing a variety of interesting options with a cool grunge vibe. The label opted for slouchy tailoring, leather accents, abstract prints and even sequins at the end of the show. To adequately reflect the grunge/neo punk mood, the designer went with a palette comprised mostly of dark, autumnal tones. Memorable pieces from the new line were cool cutaway blazers, cropped moto jackets, languid abstract print dresses or cool drop crotch sequined pants.
