NYFW Spring 2020: 70s Style Collections

New York Fashion Week spring 2020 brought many common sources of inspiration, with radically different interpretations among various brands. Case in point? The 70s fashion, which inspired bohemian creations, sporty and preppy alternatives, edgy and sexy options and even a few elegant ensembles.

What does this mean for fashionistas? That they will no longer be restricted by a narrow, stereotypical set of influences. These labels brought plenty of unique accents worth exploring:

NYFW Spring 2020: 40s Meet 70s Style at Michael Kors

Designer Michael Kors envisioned the perfect summer romance for his spring 2020 collection, taking inspiration from both the 40s and the 70s.

His designs blended romantic accents with sporty ones and had an effortless allure being “casual yet polished” as he put it. Key pieces from his show were fab linen dresses, retro swimsuits, high waist printed skirts, wide legged pants and chic oversized coats. With a color palette which revolved mostly around neutrals, the new line brought plenty of versatile pieces that have the power to fascinate women of all ages. 70s influences could also be sensed in the Rachel Zoe’s new line, however, the designer didn’t go for a romantic mood. Instead, she envisioned a modern safari theme, with a subtle hint of romance. The line was filled with several chic denim pieces, cargo shorts, chic minimalist dresses, gladiator sandals and, of course plenty animal prints – no safari theme would be complete without them. All of the pieces from the new line are extremely wearable, which is why we think that her spring 2020 collection will be a big commercial success. View more: Rachel Zoe Spring 2020 Collection

Ms. Sui’s bohemian spring 2020 collection was the perfect reflection of festival attire. This time the source of inspiration was English Pre-Raphaelite artwork. Aside from the usual 60s and 70s inspired floral tunics, crochet lace cardigans and kimono jackets, gorgeous chiffon dresses or cool gladiator sandals, the designer also brought a hint of glamor in her new line with several metallic accents which added a surprisingly polished allure. Anna Sui said it best: “The clothes end up having a very romantic feel to them, but you could also see someone wearing them to a rock festival.” View more: Anna Sui Spring 2020 Collection

It takes quite a lot confidence and imagination to combine concepts that seem radically different, but this is exactly what designer Scott Sternberg did for the Band of Outsiders spring 2020 collection: “I wanted to take that idea of the ethereal seventies woman and meld it with something more sporty and preppy,” he stated. The line brought into the spotlight a myriad of sporty pieces, A-line tunics, maxi skirts, ponchos and color blocked knits. View more: Band of Outsiders Spring 2020 Collection
