From retro inspired designs to fresh takes on classic pieces, designers brought their A-game to Milan Fashion Week. Some trends mirrored the Spring 2020 ideas first seen on the runways in New York and London, but the Italian flair in Milan was unmistakeable.
Check out the most important Spring 2020 trends from Milan Fashion Week, from the latest pants and belts to hair and makeup. Find out which Italian designers impressed fashion critics the most in Milan with these cool trends.
1970s Retro
The hippie spirit of the 1970s ruled the Milan runways, with a wide range of elements, from floppy hats to retro floral prints and suede.
Adding a touch of modern chic to the seventies vibe, designers ranging from Gucci, Roberto Cavalli and Prada to Max Mara, Etro and Emilio Pucci all showcased groovy pieces that could end up defining next spring.
Denim
While jeans never really lose their place on the runway, denim is going strong as one of the major Spring 2020 trends from Milan Fashion Week. Dolce & Gabbana and Bottega Veneta shined when it comes to appliques on denim, while Gucci bet on all denim looks, including jumpsuits. Fendi, Emporio Armani and DSquared also helped make denim a big trend for the upcoming season.

Culottes
Forget about oversized bermudas, since culottes are coming back with a bang. Few ideas were as widespread as the culottes at Milan Fashion Week. From Jil Sander, Armani and Gucci to Marni, Sportmax and Max Mara, culottes made a big splash on the runway. The trend even influenced denim hemlines at Dolce & Gabbana.
Sheer and Mesh
Transparent fabrics were a more niche trend in New York and London, but they’re one of the boldest Spring 2020 trends from Milan Fashion Week. While runway models were comfortable with showing more than most women, mesh and sheer offer a great opportunity for layering in spring and summer. Some of the most daring looks were seen during shows by Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Roberto Cavalli, and Fendi.
Fringe
While it could be considered a staple of the 1970s Retro trend, fringe was reinterpreted in modern ways by many designers, becoming its own thing. Leather vests with fringe (Alberta Ferretti) were the classic interpretation of the trend, but Marco de Vincenzo, Just Cavalli, Etro, and Jimmy Choo took fringe into more unexpected places.
Asymmetrical Necklines
The New York and London Fashion Week featured a few asymmetrical necklines, but they blew up in Italy, as one of the most important Spring 2020 trends from Milan Fashion Week. Most asymmetrical necklines also feature a bare shoulder, and some are balanced with a long sleeve on the other arm. Versace, Emporio Armani, Costume National, and Angelos Bratis were the biggest brands featuring the trend.
Ribbon-Tied Belts
While big belts tied in a graphic, ribbon-like way have already shown up at London Fashion Week in the Burberry collection, Milan took this trend and rand with it. Both dresses and coats were belted with big bow-tie belts for a chic look. Emporio Armani and Sportmax led the pack for this trend, with the latter also tying it into the fringe trend with fringed leather belts.
Textured Hair
Slick hair seems to be on its way out. The Milan runways featured a lot of texture, from ponytails to updos. Prada, Giorgio Armani and Marni were just few of the fashion houses who put forward textured hair as one of the big Spring 2020 trends from Milan Fashion Week, created with either texturizing mousse or hair wax.
Innovative Braids
One of the most innovative Spring 2020 trends from Milan Fashion Week, braids evolved in unexpected ways. Giamba, the new collection by Giambattista Valli, featured models with a skinny braid along the center part, while Marco de Vincenzo added bright colors to fishtails, and Giorgio Armani opted for complicated knots and cornrows.
Neutral Lips
The natural, no-makeup makeup look was a big deal in London and New York, but the Italian fashion shows only focused on neutral lips, usually adding brighter colors to the eyes. Cavalli, Fendi, Jil Sander all opted for a muted lip that highlighted more daring choices for the eyes, from blue to black smoky eyes.
