Derek Lam for Estee Lauder Makeup Collection

Derek Lam for Estee Lauder Makeup Collection

The Derek Lam for Estee Lauder makeup collection will hit the counters starting with January 2020. Tom Pecheux, creative makeup director of Estée Lauder and the designer are long time friends, so this is most likely the main reason why the designer felt comfortable choosing Estée Lauder for his first foray into cosmetics.

You might not know it, but if you’ve admired any of the makeup looks from the Derek Lam runway shows from the past eight seasons, you can thank Estee Lauder’s creative director for the inspiration as according to the designer: “I’ve been working with Tom since my very first show and Estée Lauder for the last eight seasons. That longtime involvement is invaluable — we’re really working hand in hand.”

The designer, who is known for his practical, versatile style offerings used the same type of approach for his new makeup line. He told WWD that:

“I’m known for having a quiet palette, being a minimalist, all those kinds of words. But working with Tom, we both wanted to go beyond that and present a real look for each show. We didn’t just want to go for the classics. Having said that, I do love the idea women could use my makeup like my ready-to-wear collection — as part of the wardrobe that creates a personality and a style. I wanted that functionality in the makeup line. I also wanted to translate what I’m seeing in fabrics and textures into the cosmetics.”

The best proof that the new Estee Lauder Derek Lam makeup collection is made to fit the lives of real women is the way the makeup artist adapted the makeup looks by taking them from day to night during the aforementioned shows: “It fits into a woman’s life — that’s what most women do. Nobody has time to go back home to shower, to clean and rebuild the makeup. Girls like to add a bit of makeup to start their second part of the day and then the evening.”

The Estee Lauder x Derek Lam makeup line will actually be sold as a set of five products: Kajal Crayon in Near Night, a navy blue; The Mascara in Black Black; The EyeShadow in Smoked Gold; The LipColor in Smoked Blush, and The Gloss in Barely Gold, which will be sold in a classy navy clutch designed by Derek Lam for $85. The line will be available at Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and esteelauder.com.
