After over 300 runway shows, New York Fashion Week outlined the biggest trends for Fall 2020. Just like every fall, tweed made a comeback, while the retro vibe of the ‘70s was still present on the catwalks with fringe, big buttons and bold shades of orange.

Fringe
With a big presence at Spring Fashion Week, fringe isn’t going anywhere this year. Most designers incorporated it in skirts for fall, but coats and jackets with fringe also had a strong presence, along with accessories from boots to bags.
BCBG Max Azria, Tracy Reese, Ralph Lauren Polo, and Josie Natori made the most out of this cool trend, adding sophistication to fall looks.
Orange
The disco spirit influenced multiple New York Fashion Week Fall 2020 trends, and orange and tangerine showed up in plenty of collections, from Victoria Beckham and Prabal Gurung to Lisa Perry and Narciso Rodriguez. From vibrant shades that veer towards red to more muted tangerines, orange is one color you won’t be able to ignore this fall.
Asymmetrical Hemlines
While the high-low hemlines have definitely peaked, angled hemlines in various shapes made a strong impression on the New York Fashion Week runways. Reem Acra, Victoria Beckham, Monique Lhuillier, and Marchesa showcased different asymmetrical hemlines for fall dresses, most of which give extra movement, with or without fringe.
Pink
If you think pink works best in spring, think again. The color showed up as one of the big New York Fashion Week Fall 2020 trends, thanks to a strong presence on the runways. From head to toe pink looks to a more judicious use of this vibrant color, pink showed up in collections from Kate Spade New York, Cushnie et Ochs, Marissa Webb and J. Crew.
Lace Tights and Pants
Another surprising choice for fall, textured, lace and fishnet tights, along with lace pants were well represented on the New York Fashion Week runways. Rodarte, Tommy Hilfiger and Proenza Schouler experimented with tights under skirts, dresses and even shorts, while black lace pants made an appearance in collections from Altuzarra, Katie Ermilio and Jonathan Simkhai.
Layered Crop Tops
Inventive designers found a way to transition the crop top from summer, and it ended up as one of the coolest New York Fashion Week Fall 2020 trends. While crop tops don’t make sense in colder weather on their own, Thakoon, Rosie Assoulin and Katie Ermilio layered them for sophisticated fall looks. If you’re going to try this trend, opt for a tight crop top over a poplin shirt for the most trendy look.
Feathers
Going from subtle detailing to dramatic embellishments, feathers also made it big on the New York Fashion Week runways. Jenny Packham showcased bold peacock feathers, while Marchesa opted for feathers over sheer fabrics. They also made an appearance on the catwalk in collections from Lela Rose and Naeem Khan.
Flats
From dainty leather flats to bold combat boots, abandoning the heel seems to be one of the major New York Fashion Week Fall 2020 trends. Carolina Herrera opted for a more delicate approach to flats, but many designers chose dramatic boots. Wes Gordon, Marc Jacobs, and Vera Wang went for broke with combat boots, while the Jason Wu for Hugo Boss collection featured riding boots.
Big Buttons
Coming back with a vengeance, big buttons also showed up in many collections at NYFW Fall 2020. Derek Lam, Victoria Beckham, Tory Burch, Suno and Calvin Klein all experimented with big buttons, but coats weren’t the only things that got the button treatment. Skirts and jumpers were also embellished with buttons for a retro feel.
Big Furs
Dramatic fur coats ruled the runway as one of the biggest New York Fashion Week Fall 2020 trends. Michael Kors, Prabal Gurung, and Altuzarra went for broke with oversized fur coats, but that wasn’t the only approach. Fur stoles also showed up on the runway, in collections from Creatures of the Wind, Jason Wu and 3.1 Phillip Lim, worn diagonally right to left.
