When looking for a quick meal, we often think about unhealthy foods that are low in nutrients to be able to satisfy our cravings. However, a tasty salad can take almost as little time preparing as a less healthy option. Caesar salad is a popular option in many restaurant menus, which means that this simple, yet delicious dish is always a crowd pleaser. Since it was first created in 1947, several versions of this salad have emerged.
Caesar salad might be a healthy option, yet is is best to keep in mind the fact that healthy doesn’t necessarily mean low calorie. Making this popular dish from scratch, however, leads you to keep a close eye on the quantities you are using and enables you to even skip some of them. Many people who closely monitor their caloric intake might decide to skip croutons. Feel free to adjust this recipe according to your own preferences.
Ingredients
Salad:
1 large egg
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 medium garlic clove, crushed
1 pinch salt
1/2 teaspoon ground pepper
1 1/2 teaspoons anchovy paste
1 teaspoon capers
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1/3 cup virgin olive oil
2 medium heads of romaine lettuce
1/3 cup Parmesan grated cheese
Croutons:
2 large garlic cloves
Pinch of salt
3 tablespoons virgin olive oil
2 cups French baguette slices cut up into 1/2 inch cubes
For preparing the croutons you will need to crush the garlic using a knife or a garlic press then make a mixture of garlic, oil and salt. Slice up the baguette into 1/2 cube and add the croutons to the mixture. Leave up to 10 minutes. Combine the Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, garlic, salt and pepper, anchovy, mustard and capers. Bring water to boil and then add the egg. If you leave the egg for 45 seconds, the egg will be coddled. If you like it cooked, leave it for about 5 minutes.
Add the egg to the ingredients and whisk well. Then, gradually add the oil, mixing continuously to make sure the mixture is well emulsified. Next, add teared romaine lettuce, croutons and grated parmesan cheese and mix everything well. Serve immediately.
